We all appreciate that the planets are in constant rotation around the Sun, so you could think that the Solar System is a vast, static disc. However, the Sun itself travels on a lengthy journey around the Milky Way at an angle totally independent of its rotation. The result is a series of cosmic spirals whirling through the galaxy.
